Book Review: The Eye of the Bedlam Bride by Matt Dinniman

In the Eye of the Bedlam Bride, for once, Carl isn’t the one to break a dungeon level. Prepotente, the goat turned crawler, is the one who breaks dungeon level 7 for all the crawlers, essentially making everyone skip over an entire level. Carl just happened to be in the starting bubble with Prepotente at the time because they were grouped. This causes extra chaos for the dungeon show runners, as they have to send thousands more crawlers than they expected to dungeon level 8, well over a week earlier than expected. But it also means the game runners really want to cull down the crawlers even more before level 9 and faction wars.

The dungeon really is mixed up on level 8. The game on this level is similar to Pokémon, where they have to capture creatures for their card deck that eventually fight for them all while gathering other support cards. And it wouldn’t be a Carl and Donut adventure if they didn’t manage to get involved in at least one annoying quest. This quest is essentially West Side Story with seals and crabs, just without the romance plot.

In this book, you get a lot more Carl backstory, which honestly is quite devastating and, for once, doesn’t really involve Beatrice (his ex) too much. A lot of the characters have to confront people they lost in the collapse or before. There are laughs as always, but quite a bit of tears. This book hit me in the feels a lot more than others.

The card system of combat can be a bit confusing at first, but if you don’t think too hard about it and just go with the story, this book was one of my favorite of my newest favorite series.

5 stars!
