I just finished reading Dominion by Jean Kwok. And holy moly, that ending. I knew 100% where the story was going, only to have the rug pulled out from under me. I was legitimately shocked. I had some suspicions the more the story went on, but ultimately I was shooketh.
The story follows Rubi, a mostly magicless ribbon dancer with amnesia, who causes damage to one of the Silver Tygers, which normally is punishable by death. Instead, she’s thrown into an arena where she either dies by the Tygers or bonds with one.
Rubi bonds with one (not really a spoiler, as it’s in like chapter 4). She’s now an outsider Azure as an elite Silver Tyger rider. And from there, the world just gets bigger and bigger as the threat of demons becomes apparent.
I really enjoyed this book. As I was reading it, I thought it was a pretty solid 4-star read, until I got to the end and that bumped it up to 5 stars for me.
I really loved the Asian-inspired mythology and world-building in Dominion. It felt very refreshing to not have the standard Eurocentric-related myths as a basis for the storytelling.
