Holy crap, this book was good. I’d had it on my TBR for a while, and I was able to borrow the audiobook from the library. On a whim, I started up the audiobook while I was grocery shopping and immediately got sucked in. I tried to do an immersive read when I got home by listening and reading my hard copy. Turns out I read faster than 1.5x, and at that point the voices started sounding funny, so I decided to read the hard copy. I finished it in less than 24 hours.
It follows Aris, who competes in a chance to win a chalice from the gods filled with a liquid that could grant almost any wish. Most go for glory, wealth, or to save their family and friends. Aris goes for revenge. She has no intention of making it out alive, as she wants to kill the gods themselves for killing her entire family when she was a child.
She ends up paired up with Harlan Raker, the captain of the King’s Guard and someone she hates almost as much as the gods.
This book gave me chills at the end. The way it built up, I knew something major would happen at the end, but I did not see what happened coming even though there were hints along the way. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
There is some spice in the book, but it’s like 90% plot, 10% spice. This is true enemies-to-lovers that kept me guessing the entire way.
