Only Ever You is a hockey romance between two childhood friends who catch feelings for each other as they grow up together but are too afraid to make the plunge. Michael is the hockey star, son of a Hockey Legend, who constantly feels like he’s in his father’s shadow. Isla is a figure skater with a dream to win gold at the Olympics. Both have big dreams that trump everything else in their lives, and work hard to get there. Just as they get to the age where romantic feelings begin to start really taking hold in their hearts, a wedge is shoved between them by someone pretending to be their friend, which irreparably damages not just their romance but their lifelong friendship.
I usually hate the miscommunication tropes, but I didn’t mind this one because it felt like something teenagers would experience naturally because of a jealous ‘friend’ who is actively trying to sabotage what they had.
I really appreciated the fact that once they were adults, they acted like actual adults. I don’t want to get into much more detail because of possible spoilers, but a miscommunication trope that happens between kids/teens is way more palatable than a miscommunication trope between adults. So thank you for making it palatable.
If you enjoy hockey romances, you’d probably like this one. I enjoyed it, but I felt like the storytelling could be a bit more dynamic like instead of having a linear timeline, for example, if we saw their past in flashbacks over the course of them reuniting in college, I would have rated it a bit higher. But that’s just a personal preference.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
