I watched the movie The Martian starring Matt Damon years before reading the book. I knew it was based on a novel, but I never got around to reading it until after finishing Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary earlier this year. Realizing Project Hail Mary was one of my favorite reads of the year, I decided I couldn’t miss out on The Martian any longer.

The Martian was fantastic—a solid 5-star, 5-raccoon read! While I personally liked Project Hail Mary a bit more, The Martian really filled in the gaps that the movie couldn’t capture. The film adaptation made a few minor changes and added some extra Hollywood drama that wasn’t strictly necessary, as the book stands strong on its own merits.

The plot follows Mark Watney—an astronaut, botanist, and mechanical engineer—who is accidentally stranded on Mars after a severe dust storm forces his crew to abort the mission. Believed to have died during the evacuation, Mark is left behind. Spoiler alert: he survives! The book brilliantly chronicles his resourcefulness as he fights to stay alive, alongside NASA’s high-stakes efforts to bring him home.

I highly recommend The Martian to anyone who enjoyed the movie or simply loves a captivating sci-fi survival story.
