I feel like I’m just chasing the Dungeon Crawler Carl high by trying out multiple LitRPG books right now. I was looking for a new audiobook to listen to while working and specifically wanted another book narrated by Jeff Hays and his Soundbooth Theater. That’s where An Unexpected Hero came on my radar.  I must say, if I had read this instead of listening to it, I may not have liked it as much as I did. Jeff Hays makes everything sound epic. 

An Unexpected Hero is about Danny, who wakes up in a fantasy realm after being a somewhat failing musician on Earth. 

Despite being a talented musician on Earth (albeit failing to make any money), his skills did not particularly transfer to being a lute-playing bard. After a barbarian, Curr, breaks his lute, Danny makes a deal with a hag, and he obtains what turns out to be a magical lute. 

He then starts being hunted by what seems like a cult and joins up with Curr to go on a grand adventure through this magical world.
