I really enjoyed this, more than I initially thought I would. It follows Lovett, who is one of the rare silkwitches. You would think that her being a silkwitch would be a good thing; however, she has limited options because of her magic hair. She can either marry a Weaver or get sent to the cloisters once she gets too old. She is almost too old, but doesn’t want to be shackled to a husband. 

Even as rare as silkwitches are, there are even fewer single Weavers to marry. Lovett, in an attempt to avoid either fate, hides her hair and steals from the wealthy using her gift until she steals from the wrong person – a Weaver. He knows exactly who and what she is, and blackmails her into entering the Vainglory, which has a prize of marrying a Weaver at the end. She just has to investigate the death of his sister, who mysteriously died during the previous Vainglory competition the year prior. 

I got this as an ARC originally, then purchased the hard copy once it was released. I’m not usually into love competitions like The Bachelor, but this was like The Bachelor in the Gilded Age with a unique magic system, murder, and conspiracy.

It took me a few chapters to get into it, but then I tore through it. I’m ultimately glad I stuck through it and hope to read the next one once it comes out. 

Despite the slow start, it’s a 5 out of 5 for me in both stars and raccoons!
