Carl and Princess Donut have reached level 6, which is the next big story level – The Hunting Grounds. On level 3, they experienced small towns and circuses, and on level 6, the stories continue in the dinosaur-filled jungles. The big catch is that outside hunters have now been unleashed against the crawlers, and their only goal is to get as much gear as possible for the faction war on level 9.
Carl has other plans and decides to make the hunters the hunted and to severely handicap the faction wars on level 9 by taking out the suppliers. He doesn’t know if he’ll even make it to level 9, but he knows he wants to screw over the rich and powerful of the universe as much as possible in the only way he can, via their entertainment.
Carl was also an agent of Chaos, but his unhinged craziness really starts to hit its stride in the Butcher’s Masquerade. He’s determined to save as many crawlers and NPCs as he can, while protecting those closest to him. I love the dinosaur story lines that start in this book. We already had Mongo, but you get introduced to Kiwi and Tina as well. I feel like Matt Dinniman is constantly like, “What would take this too far into the crazy?” and then does it anyway. I think that’s what I like most is because I genuinely can’t guess what will happen next, the majority of the time. I sometimes can figure out a hint of what’s to come, but overall, I constantly feel like I’m in for a wild ride the entire time I’m reading the series.
Still a 5-star, 5 raccoon read for me.
