If you’re looking for your next obsession, This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me is a must-read. This Portal/Isekai Fantasy is perfect for readers who love high stakes, political intrigue, and a realistic protagonist who actually learns from her mistakes.

The story follows Maggie, a 20-something woman who wakes up in her favorite book series. Unlike lighthearted fantasy romances, this world carries heavy Game of Thrones vibes. Stranded in the series’ timeline, Maggie uses her near-encyclopedic knowledge of the plot to navigate from beggar to noblewoman, attempting to save her favorite characters and their world while avoiding the deadly political landscape.

I honestly really liked Maggie as a character; she felt very realistic, as she makes mistakes but also learns from her mistakes. She’s quick on her feet, but also knows her limitations. It ends on quite the cliffhanger, and I almost wish I had held off reading it until it was closer to book 2’s release, because this was SO GOOD. It literally kept me awake part of the night while I lay in bed, trying to go to sleep. I also appreciated all the various Texas references throughout the book.
