Book Review: Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry

Odessa is a princess ruled by a sudden shift in fate. While her sister was trained from birth to marry a foreign prince and maintain the world’s fragile peace, the prince chooses Odessa instead. This year, the stakes are higher than ever: for the first time, a princess is being sent into the heart of an enemy land. With no preparation, Odessa’s father has only moments to brief her on her new mission, spying on a husband she was never meant to have.

I absolutely ate this book up when it first released! It isn’t often that a plot truly catches me off guard, but the brilliance of this story lies in its misdirection. It feeds you a few “obvious” tropes to set you up for the massive twists you’ll never see coming.

The heart of the story is Odessa’s torn loyalty between the family she left behind and the people she’s married into. The world-building is immersive and essential; the story simply wouldn’t function without the unique political landscape the author created. If you find yourself thinking the plot feels predictable in the first half, keep reading. The payoff is worth it.

With the sequel arriving soon, now is the perfect time to dive in!
