Book Review: How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying By Django Wexler

Imagine dying hundreds of times in a gruesome, torturous cycle, only to wake up weak and naked in a pool of water while a wizard tells you that you are the chosen one! After lifetimes of failing to defeat an ever-changing Dark Lord, Davi has officially reached her breaking point. In this Western Isekai LitRPG, Davi decides she’s done playing the hero. If the world is determined to have a Dark Lord, it might as well be her.

One of my favorite parts of the story is Davi’s unhinged energy. To everyone else, she looks like a madwoman; to Davi, she’s just someone who has seen every possible outcome and knows what will and won’t work. Her first step to world domination? Recruit a local Orc clan, that she may or may not have murdered herself several times already…

I listened to this one on audiobook, and the narrator absolutely nails Davi’s chaotic commentary. It’s one of the funniest books I’ve encountered in a long time and actually kick-started a LitRPG obsession for me.

Expect a fantastic, slow-burning sapphic monster romance that balances out the crazy plans of villainy. How to Become the Dark Lord or Die Trying is a cool exploration of a world without consequences: what do you do when you can just get infinite do-overs?
