Freedom’s Landing begins with Kristin, a woman abducted during an alien invasion of Earth and forced into slavery. After she escapes, she carves out a solitary existence in the jungles, up until a Catteni male named Zainal crashes near her refuge. Her choice to help him backfires, leading to their capture by a slave ship destined for a colony “seeding” mission. Now, Kristin, Zainal, and hundreds of other slaves of various planetary origins must survive on an uncharted planet to prove it’s habitable for their overseers. However, when they get there, they discover that while not exactly colonized, someone very powerful already owns it as a farming planet. So they hatch a plan to try to befriend the “Farmers” to help them be free of the Catteni overlords.
Though originally published in the mid-90s, the story feels very fresh (you just have to get over the “new” technology sounding 30+ years old). It’s a Classic Sci-Fi tale that leans heavily into the tropes of human ingenuity, liberation, and found family forged in crisis.
For the Romance Readers: There is a slow-burn subplot here, but it remains mostly closed-door or fade-to-black. The focus of the series remains firmly on survival and world-building rather than romance. If you love a story about grit and rebellion, this 30-year-old gem is a must-read.
