Book Review: Spellcast by Sophie Jordan

Spellcast is about Arden, a girl who wishes she were invisible and, for ten years, tries to locate the witch she believes cursed her. No one in her village can see her or is aware of her presence, and she witnesses her friends and family’s lives pass by like a ghost. Ten years after her curse, her village is burned to the ground by dragons – myths that end up being real.

From the ashes, a group of dragons finds her, and she is seen for the first time since she was cursed. Tage, the alpha, steals her away to their caves, and the romantasy really goes off from there.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. It felt a bit slow to start with, and the romance seemed to happen fast in comparison to the first part of the book. I didn’t realize it was part of a series until after I read it; it felt like it could be a standalone novel. The first two books in the series are definitely worth reading.

If you like tragic curses, dragon shifters, and interesting magic systems, you should like this book. I really liked the characters themselves; they all felt pretty fleshed out, and all felt like actual individuals. I received this as an advance copy via Netgalley.
