To Catch a Witch Assassin is a Spicy Paranormal Romance in a world of witches, humans, vampyres, and monsters. It follows Gentry, a magic-less human, and Kit, a witch. Gendry is imprisoned in the Curse Ward, where people who are cursed are held to protect themselves and others from their curses. She is being held against her will and is soul-bound to someone else, which means any injury the other person gets, gets transferred to her. She finds out she is soulbound to a powerful politician, so she puts a hit out on herself as a means to escape. Kit is the assassin who begrudgingly accepts the assignment to protect his coven.
Magic-less Gentry turns out to be more than Kit can handle as she traps him into owing her 3 favors, one of which she uses to get out of the ward. Together, they try to figure out how to completely get her free of her soulbound curse.
As a whole, I enjoyed the story. I liked that Kit was a reluctant assassin who felt a bit more like a golden retriever personality than a stone-cold assassin energy I expected going into the book. His only real goals are protecting those he loves, and he is the guy who will do what he has to do to protect them. Gentry feels like a real person who can be both hard and soft, wicked and shy, and is smart enough to know when to ask for help. One thing I especially appreciated was that, at some point, there was a very easy lack of communication trope that felt like it was being set up – aka one would keep important information from the other, but instead, the first actual chance they had, they talked about it. I think I actually said “oh thank god!” when that happened, because it always seemed like an easy way to cause unnecessary drama.
I felt the plot twists were worth the wait, and everything came together nicely. It also set up what most likely is the next book right at the end.
There is a slow-burning romance, which I feel is necessary with enemies to love romances, though there was a clear attraction pretty early on.
Four out of five stars!
