Book Review: Secret War by Michael Lucas

Secret War is a multi POV YA science fiction start of a series. It follows Devin, a relatively normal college student, who accidentally witnesses something he shouldn’t, and Becca, a mysterious, beautiful college student who is part of a secret organization. The Secret Organization that has been waging a war for centuries, if not longer, across the galaxy, fighting mysterious aliens that are made up of viruses.

All in all, there’s a lot of mystery, conspiracies, and hidden agendas across many levels of the organization.

Start with the good: I really liked Devin; he seemed pretty genuine as a character and is at an age where he tries to make good decisions, but also is blinded by his crush on Becca. The alien concept overall is pretty cool. It was a little hard to wrap my head around the explanation, but interesting to think about.

As for things I didn’t care for, I really disliked Becca. She just didn’t feel very consistent, and for someone who is part of this secret organization that is a huge part of her life and is somewhat well-ranked, she makes a lot of dumb decisions that you would think she was smart enough to avoid, and is extremely rash overall. She would be an extreme bitch one moment, and then act extremely sweet to get what she wanted. I honestly hope that Devin does not end up with her because of how manipulative and conniving she is.

It was generally an okay book, but I most likely won’t continue with the series. It just wasn’t my cup of tea for science fiction.

I received an advance copy of this book for free to read and review voluntarily.
