Book Review: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Project Hail Mary

By Andy Weir

I will start with, I haven’t read The Martian by Andy Weir, I’ve just seen the movie. I first heard of this book when I saw they were making a movie about this one, too, so I checked it out.

I am so glad that I did. If you liked The Martian (movie), you’ll like this book. The storytelling and dialogue have a very similar feeling overall.

The story is about Ryland Grace, a science teacher-turned-astronaut who is humanity’s last hope of saving the sun, which is somehow dying.

He wakes up in the middle of space, on a spaceship with no memories of his life. He can tell he’s been asleep a while since his two fellow astronauts are long dead in their own statis chambers. It’s a mystery that unfolds as he remembers his past and his mission. The story flipflops between him in the present and what he starts to remember in the past.

I don’t want to give too much away, but I was ugly crying a few times during the book, as well as completely shocked at the turn of events. There are twists and turns, and a similar plausible-sounding science (like The Martian) behind everything that transpires throughout the book.

Five stars all day, honestly, I’d give it 6 out of 5 stars because of how good it was.
